Herniated Disc Q & A
by Tim Brennan, DC

What is a herniated disc?

Spinal discs are round, rubbery cushioning pads sandwiched between each of the spine’s 24 vertebrae. Designed to act as shock absorbers, discs have tough, fibrous exteriors and soft, gel-like centers, similar to a jelly donut. A disc becomes herniated when some or all of the gel is forced out through a tear, due to force from the vertebrae located above and below. The protruding gel can press on nerves near the disc, causing severe pain. Herniated discs are most common in the lower spine but can also occur in the neck and mid back. A herniated disc is one of the most common causes of lower back, sciatica, and neck pain.

How does Dr. Tim Brennan treat herniated disc?

Dr. Brennan treats herniated and bulging discs with a combination of chiropractic adjustments, often using the computerized Ultralign Adjusting system, spinal decompression, and MLS Laser therapies. These treatments are safe, effective, non-invasive, and drug-free.*

How does spinal decompression therapy work?

Spinal decompression therapy involves gentle mechanical stretching of the spine to literally relieve pressure on spinal discs. Decompression is a safe and highly effective treatment for the pain in the neck or lower back associated with disc herniation.* Often Dr. Brennan uses MLS Laser therapy in conjunction with spinal decompression to relieve lower back pain

How does MLS Laser Therapy work?

This advanced laser technology utilizes dual wavelengths of infrared light energy that penetrates the skin deeply into the muscles, ligaments and tendons of the back or neck. The energy stimulates increased circulation, lymphatic drainage and a metabolic reaction at the cellular level. The overall effect results in reduced swelling, inflammation, pain and the stimulation of soft tissue repair. MLS Laser Therapy is a safe, non-invasive, pain-free method to treat disc herniation.*
