Neuropathy Q & A
by Tim Brennan, DC

What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy, sometimes referred to as peripheral neuropathy, is a progressive condition caused by damage to the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system is a complex communications network that carries information between the central nervous system (made up of the brain and spinal cord) and the rest of the body. Neuropathy, which affects some 20 million individuals in this country, has numerous causes. It is a common complication of diabetes, autoimmune diseases (such as Sjogren's syndrome, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis), HIV/AIDS, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, alcoholism, and certain drugs and toxins.

What are the most common symptoms of neuropathy?

Neuropathy symptoms can be both excruciating and unyielding, greatly diminishing an individual’s quality of life. Symptoms are usually experienced in the hands, feet, arms and or legs. They include sensations described as a numbness, burning, coldness, and a painful sensation called dysesthesias that feels like being poked at with pins and needles.

How is neuropathy treated at Brennan Chiropractic & Laser Pain Solutions?

Standard treatment for neuropathy is medication aimed at decreasing pain. These include antidepressants, known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), anticonvulsants, and opioids. Unfortunately, many patients receive only partial or no relief at all from these. Others can not tolerate the side effects. However, at Brennan Chiropractic & Laser Solutions, many patients have enjoyed life-changing results with MLS Laser Therapy.* This advanced, game-changing technology utilizes dual wavelengths of infrared light energy that penetrate the skin deeply into the affected tissue, muscles, and nerves. The energy stimulates circulation, lymphatic drainage and a metabolic reaction at the cellular level. The overall benefit is a reduction of swelling, inflammation and pain and the activation of soft tissue repair. MLS Laser Therapy is safe, non-invasive, and pain-free, and can also effectively alleviate neuropathic pain without any side effects or downtime.*
